Inside Payroll Bridge: How Gusto and Parafin help small businesses make payroll
Team Parafin
The problem worth solving
For a small business owner, payroll is one of the top jobs to be done that can't slip. Behind every payroll run are real people who show up every day, counting on payday for rent, groceries, and everything in between.
The issue is often timing, not the health of the business. A perfectly stable business can hit a week where money is tight: picture a retailer who stocked up on holiday inventory and added seasonal staff, then had a client pay late or a deposit not clear. Even stable, growing companies hit these weeks, and it says nothing about whether the business is sound. In 2024, more than 3 million employees at small businesses experienced a missed payroll, and the number of businesses missing a run is up more than 50% since 2019.²
Here’s what makes payroll hard to cover: there is no flexible credit product built for it. Payroll can’t be charged to a card, and the financing options that could cover it, such as a new traditional line of credit or loan, are too slow or hard to get for a Friday deadline. So owners improvise by dipping into personal savings, scrambling for an expensive loan or do not pay themselves at all. In a 2025 Gusto study, 38% of employers that used outside financing did so to cover payroll.³ Parafin’s own data shows the same pattern. Payroll is one of the most common use cases for its capital programs, accounting for 27% of all originations.⁴
And it's not just owners who feel it. A late or missed payroll creates extra work and cost for the platform, and can leave an owner feeling less supported than they'd like.
The solution: Payroll Bridge
Payroll Bridge lets an owner fund a payroll run with a line of credit and pay employees on time, even when they're short on cash. Maybe a client paid late, or they’d rather purchase inventory or launch an ad campaign. Either way, Payroll Bridge appears right in the run as a funding option. The owner can quickly apply and get a decision in as little as 10 seconds.⁴ If approved, the owner can select a payment plan and Parafin advances the money into payroll on the spot.
Building this program in-house would have required Gusto to develop capabilities outside its core business, from standing up a bank sponsor to underwriting, capital markets, servicing, compliance, and a risk team. Partnering with Parafin allowed Gusto to launch Payroll Bridge in 6 weeks.

Gusto spoke with several partners before choosing Parafin:
“We spoke with a number of potential embedded partners, and Parafin stood out. They brought a strong team, a flexible platform that could be deeply embedded in our payroll experience, and an underwriting approach that could support the kinds of eligible SMBs Gusto serves.” — Dan Loomis, General Manager and Head of Product, Gusto Money

Those design choices matter because they address what small business owners actually feel. There's no interest rate to decode, just a flat fee the owner sees upfront. Repayment is flexible: 4, 8, or 12 cycles, chosen at the time of a run.
There's no credit check and no personal guarantee. Instead, Parafin's underwriting model reads bank activity in real time, so an owner with steady operating history who wouldn’t be approved by a traditional bank can still qualify.

What Payroll Bridge means for the platform
For Gusto, Payroll Bridge improves the customer experience while creating a new source of revenue.
A lifeline customers remember. Payroll Bridge solves one of the most stressful moments an owner faces. An owner who was short and still made payroll does not forget who made that possible, which builds loyalty and becomes a reason owners pick and stay with a provider.
Less operational overhead. A run that fails due to insufficient funds could lead to a support ticket and manual customer support follow-up. By helping employers cover the run, Payroll Bridge cuts those failures, which frees up team resourcing.
No disruption to the core user flow. Payroll Bridge is an optional method for eligible customers at the time of the payroll run, not a change to how payroll works. Parafin provides end-to-end program support for the financing itself, so there is less work required of Gusto.
A better customer experience that brings revenue. Payroll Bridge opened up a new line of revenue for Gusto, and it did it by solving something owners genuinely needed. It takes financing owners were already seeking elsewhere and brings it into the platform they trust, so Gusto continues to grow by being there in the moments that matter most.

The proof
Owners across different industries such as childcare, pharmacy, retail, fitness, and professional services describe the same experience: a cash-timing gap they did not see coming, an option waiting at the moment of need, and a decision fast enough to keep payroll on track. In 2025, Tearsheet named Payroll Bridge the Best Embedded Finance Product for SMBs.
For Gusto, Payroll Bridge settled a question about how to build financial products for small businesses. "Partnering with specialists like Parafin let us launch high-impact products faster by leveraging their underwriting and servicing expertise, so we could focus on the customer experience and the overall financial operating system we're building for SMBs," says Loomis.
Payroll Bridge is powered by Parafin's Pay Over Time, which allows Gusto's customers to fund payroll via a line of credit. Pay Over Time also lets businesses defer payment on expenses like inventory, equipment, advertising, or rent. Learn how Pay Over Time can support your customers.
